Käte Hamburger Lecture #11: Luis Hernández Camarero: A Medical (Po)ethics

In her lecture, Diana Rodríguez Vértiz explores the relationship between healing, medicine and reparation. How can medical practices, which are often associated with complicity in violent practices, contribute to reparation? She explores this question through the poetry of Luis Hernández Camarero, a doctor and poet who campaigned for more just medicine.

16.07.2025, 18:00 - 20:00 | Innovation Centre, Campus Saarbrücken, Building A2 1, Seminar room 3.05.1

The Käte Hamburger Centre for Cultural Practices of Reparation (CURE) and the CEUS | Cluster for European Studies cordially invite you to the next Käte Hamburger Lecture at Saarland University. As part of this lecture series, fellows of the Centre will present their latest research perspectives on cultural practices of reparation. Following the lectures, the audience will have the opportunity to engage with the central topics in greater depth in a public discussion round. Diana Rodríguez Vértiz: Luis Hernández Camarero: A Medical (Po)ethics Even though the Peruvian doctor and poet Luis Hernández never explicitly mentioned the word healing in his poetry albums, the call to honour the lives of people marked by pain can be felt throughout his work. Hernández understood this call, which in essence defines the nature of healing, as the true task of medicine. But how can healing be promoted within a biomedical practice that still owes many reparations due to a long history of complicity in atrocities? Luis Hernández posed the question of how to create a more just medical practice - one that fulfils its duty to heal. In her lecture, CURE fellow Diana Rodríguez Vértiz will offer some reflections on the relationship between healing, medicine and reparation in the context of the Peruvian creator's aesthetic project. The Käte Hamburger Lectures offer a deeper insight into the Centre's ongoing research, communicating these ideas to the wider university community and inviting the public to engage in meaningful discussions about cultural practices of reparation.
